Depression in pregnancy and post-partum..is it or is it a passing symptom?

Feeling depressed?

Feeling guilty?

--Temper raised so easily by everything. Teaching kids about shoe tying and manners..and losing it. Mad at myself. Then kid is upset with themselves. Told myself I wouldn't be that mom. Now I have to be that work in progress. I was so much better being a therapist working with kids than my own. Am I the mom everyone is saying why did she have kids in the first place then...or am I just lost in how to be a good mom, while under my own stresses. Like someone once told me, "It's all in the delivery." I am just mad at myself that I can't be the mom everyone gushes about being so good.--
I can't be the only one who feels this way!

Being made felt bad for not feeling well:

"You're laying down again?"

"You've been pregnant before, so it should be easier for you to handle, right?"

The sympathetic husband...what are you after?
Let's be honest. It's never enough for us, lol. However, a little surprise goes a long way.

-Grateful--We SHOULD be!-

Yes, there are couples who cannot have babies. There are babies with all sorts of disabilities and complicated pregnancies.
Someone always has it a little worse than you. Find that silver lining before the obvious miracle at the end of this journey. That's all I keep telling myself.

God won't give you something you can't handle. Best piece of knowledge I know.

~Food (pros and cons)~

(Note: November, 2011, retrieved from: http://www.prevention.com/food/healthy-eating-tips/food-and-mood-best-foods-make-you-feel-better)
Mood booster:  Low fat, low protein, high carb (Think english muffin with blueberry jam)
Sleep help: Cut caffeine, lighten dinner, replace chocolate with carob, increase copper intake (Think chicken sandwich or half a baked potato)
Knock out bad weather blues: Have a little caffeine. (You are allowed a cup of coffee a day.) The contraindication for this is that caffeine can increase irritability. Know the difference in your mood.
Keep exhaustion at bay: Eat food with iron. (Think beans, legumes, and meats.)
Refuse to feel depressed: Eat fish.
Bat away stress:  Have a healthy shake or smoothie.  (Think sugar-free green berry smoothies)

YOGA:

Studies have proven that yoga releases endorphins and gets rid of toxins in your body, which in turn will help your body's hormones and feeling less emotional. So downward dog, y'all!

"Every pregnancy is different"

Sometimes, not all the time, I want to cause pain to those pregos that have absolutely no problems. Just kidding. But SERIOUSLY?! No morning sickness. No hunger pains. No weight control issues. Still exercising verociously. No rushing to the bathroom every 5 mins. No worries about baby having too low or too high birth weight.  No swelling. No weird growing feet. They sneeze and give birth to twins vaginally.  Yeah, okay.  Let me be the first one to say THEY ARE THE WEIRD ONES.  We do the best we can.  If we don't think like that, these self-doubting thoughts and depressive symptoms creep up and ruin our job of providing forth our little miracle.

How did our moms do it?

I really think each generation of moms had it easier in a certain way. Our moms? They weren't the Pinterest-researching, fun and healthy meal-prepping, activity planning moms we are. Atleast, my mom wasn't.  She had to work 2 nursing jobs, while dealing with hyperemesis gravidarum for 9 months, creating a meal that would last all week for everyone and clean whenever she could. The parties involved inviting people over and ordering or cooking buffet food. There were no girls nights out and established foods you could not eat and dads were not as hands-on.
So, in conclusion, ...............................................................................................................................
Pat yourself on the back and give yourself a standing ovation! You are doing things no other generation could pull off!

Careful!

You need to be careful in approaching and interacting with people apparently. I almost always smile and say hello to everyone I pass. To my embarassment, I had our crossing guard ask me, "Did I do or say anything to offend you?"It was then I realized I was so involved with my own stresses,  it comes across offensive. I told her that I was in my own little world and apologized. It made me open my eyes on what I have been doing.

But don't milk it...
While there is no way I can say I am a doctor or expert on depression, I can say I have been there.  I have also seen others and talked to others who have gone through it.  I have spoken to a dozen doctors, therapists,  and read up on research.  I have listened to advice from the opposite sex.
Sometimes, we just have to take a step back and realize it's not so bad.  Just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep on truckin.  Seek out professional help when you need to and take care of yourself.  Noone else can do it for you.

SUPPORT YOURSELF

Of course, a good support system helps tremendously.  If you are lucky enough to have a great husband (like mine:P) or partner, take heed of their input.  Let them in on your feelings.  Don't do this on a daily basis.  However, every once in a while, doing it may shed some light on what your real focus needs to be and what things can be done to turn around how you are feeling.  Turn to those moms who may just be those that had perfect pregnancies.  Misery loves company.  A smile, though, is contagious.  You may just forget for a moment about how irritatingly happy they are and laugh together about how cool it is eating a bowl of cereal on your belly.

The ultimate sacrifice with the ultimate blessing

Whether it be during pregnancy or post-pregnancy, feeling emotional is normal.  Hormones can also affect how extreme that can get.  Environmental, situations, support, complications all play a role.  However, what you feel is what that little stud or little ballerina will feel.  They learn everything from you.  They learn how to deal with stress and feeling let down from you.  They learn how to be proud of yourself through your actions.  Only us strong moms can do that.  What a tremendous job we have!  Take a look at their faces when you are feeling down and smile, thinking it's going to be a good day!

At Target, women's clothing is generally marked down on Tuesdays, men's on Wednesday, and kids' on Mondays. Markdowns at Marshalls and T.J. Maxx usually happen on Wednesday.

Linens—January “white sales” and the end of each season (i.e. as spring approaches, winter-colored linens will go on sale). It’s common to see linens (in all colors, not just white!) on sale for up to 60 percent off retail.

Furniture—when stores need to make room for new inventory.

Gas grill—Like air conditioners, the best time to buy is during winter months, when demand for outdoor grills is low.

Boat—Boat shows, held from January through March, generally offer the best prices.

Digital camera—The Consumer Electronics Show and Photo Marketing Association convention mean new models will arrive in stores. Shop in January and February for deals on last year’s models.

February

Humidifiers

Indoor furniture-Where you shop makes a difference. Catalog retailers, for example, have been around for several years, sometimes as an adjunct to a chain of stores. Mass-market retailers, including Ikea, Value City, and Walmart, tend to stress price. Expect a fairly limited fabric selection on upholstered furniture. They will need to make room for new lines in April.

Home appliances—New models arrive in September and October, when you’ll find good deals on last year’s models. Holiday weekends—Fourth of July, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Presidents Day—also are good bets for deals. If you’re willing to buy an appliance with a ding or a scratch, you can save hundreds.

Shrubs, trees, etc.—Autumn is a good time to buy bulbs (store them according to directions on the packaging) and trees and shrubs (nurseries are trying to clear out inventory).

New car—New models roll into the lot in fall, so shop in September for last year’s model. Shop on a weekday at the end of the month to get the undivided attention of a salesperson trying to make their monthly quota.

Party DIY themes- Chapter 1- Fun Toddler Birthdays!

Here are some of the party themes I have used for my son and daughter.
Some are semi-homemade and semi-store-bought. Some are all home-made.  Some are really based on location.  We have been pretty lucky in the past years to be able to put them together.
Hope this inspires you for some party ideas!

Winter One-derland party!

I had my 5 year old have fun painting these wooden sticks white and put glitter on the ends, then hung them up with sheer white ribbon.

I ordered this from etsy.com.
Very cute outfit that comes with snowflake leggings and personalization.

I made all homemade comfort finger foods, as her birthday was in winter.
Bacon wrapped tater tots (shown above), fried mac and cheese balls (see below),
and of course, a hot chocolate station.

My cousin made red wine truffles with sprinkles.

One of the games was to pop open the white balloons that had prizes in them (that was fun sticking them in there). Beats not having a pinata for outdoor use in the cold!

Another game was pin the snowflake on my daughter (blown up poster of her highness).

Another game was to use unsharpened glitter pencils only to go on a scavenger hunt for prizes in a bucket (no hands).

Blue and purple themed snowflake cake.

Planes party!

Granted the location (Aviation museum)  helped tremendously,
but there were some things that I had fun doing by myself.

The invitations almost look like airplane tickets:

My crazy self likes to put hints towards the next year's birthday party theme in the goody bags from the previous year.  So the year before, I made little suitcases as the goody bags (made from paper lunch bags and shapes glued on to it. This link is similar to what I made, but I put brown paper lunch bags on their sides and added little handles on top:

 https://www.pinterest.com/pin/187884615674711589/

Disney Junior party!

My son loved every single Disney Jr. show at the time, so I tried to appeal to his every liking.
This included Special Agent Oso, Handy Manny, Chuggington, Jake and the NeverLand Pirates, and Le Frank's cooking episodes.

Scavenger hunt for finding the most Gold Doubloons.

Summer party deserves a pool for every age.

Top it off with a Little Einsteins pinata!

Toy Story Beach party

So, the only drawback to the beach party was that we did not account for how windy it would get where we were and how none of the balloons or table activities could stay down for very long on the tables.

Made alien head pops and stuck them on a styrofoam dome.
Also made fruit pops and stuck them on a watermelon shell.
Perfect for the summer!

Hand out some grass skirts and start a limbo dance!

Hired a hula dancer!

Had Buzz Lightyear and Woody surprise us, but to a scared 2 year old..lol.

The cake and party invitation looked identical.

Check out:
https://www.etsy.com/transaction/78215426?utm_source=transaction&utm_medium=trans_email&utm_campaign=purchase_ftb_alt

I based it on the Toy Story short about them wanting to go on a luau vacation.

Minnie and daisy Bow-tique party

After receiving the entrance bow stamp, everyone joined the party!

I got her personized outfit from www.etsy.com.

Unfortunately, it looks blurry. It is a Bow Curtain I made from a extra spool of art paper the kids had from their easel, some decorative scissors helped, and so did the thousand hair bows my daughter has.
The only thing I bought was one set of Minnie Mouse party decorations for the party.

I bought red daisies and decorated the old wine bottle with red and white polka dot ribbon
(the theme on the invitation).

I made little signs for the food table with polka dot paper (same as what I used in the invitation) and large flat bottom paper clips. Some Minnie & Daisy stickers helped, too.

Minnie and Daisy Strawberry cake with Vanilla Buttercream frosting

Ears to match!

Games included: Pin the ring or bow on Minnie, Pinata fun, and a table full of Minnie and Daisy stamps, coloring, Coloring a puzzle, and Minnie tattoos.

Sports themed party!

Green and blue themed sports party held at a sports facility for kids.
(Green for Philadelphia Eagles, Blue for New York Yankees. Yes, we are a very torn family:P)

I got custom-made jerseys for my son's birthday.
The box wrapped in sports wrapping paper held the next year's party-themed goody bags.

Fun labeling appetizers.

Probably the most macho setup ever. Ha!

Balloon setup.

The birthday boy!

Parents can get involved with the different sports activities too!

A lil face makeup never hurt anyone.

The sports field of a cake.

A very worn-out birthday bunch of kids.

Even the baby had a onesie jersey.
I ironed on 00 on the backside of the onesie, and put TJ's bday on the front of it.

When we came home, the adults pigged out on Heros, and other popular game grub.
The styrofoam covered in sports wrapping paper had chocolate covered strawberry pops on them.
All eaten immediately!

***Will try to update this post with more pictures
as soon as I find some more pictures of my homemade items!
